August: Consignment: 3

 Attention~Attention~Attention

Last week we talked about what Femme is looking for right now in terms of Transitional and Fall items.  This week we are going to define some terms.

Resale:
This is an over arching term which includes every item once owned by an individual and now being sold to another individual. Everything from EBay and Craig's List, Thrift Stores and Goodwill, to your local garage sale fall under the 'resale' umbrella.  But not all Resale is resale.  Let us explain:
Resale Stores:
The 2 types of Resale Stores:
Buy Out Right:  These stores welcome you to bring your gently worn items and pay you cash out right.  This works really well with your ready-to-wear and lower end items.  Some of them accept out of date styles and Target brands.  Keep in mind, they can't pay you much.  In fact, most of them encourage and ask you not to bring in your designer items.  They just can't invest that kind of money in the items up front.  Remember, these boutiques have to insure they will make a profit on each item they buy, so they pay low.  In general, you will make about what you would make at a garage sale.
Donation:  These are small boutiques and giant chains like Goodwill and Salvation Army.  They are often non-profit charities.  The money they make from selling donations is used to fund shelters and such.  They are great places to take your items which the Consignment Boutique and the Buy Out Right Boutique rejected.  They will supply you with a receipt to receive a tax right-off.

Consignment:
Near and dear to our heart is consignment.
Consignment is defined as a showcase for a particular number of days and a split of what the items sell for between the store and the owner of the clothing.  At the end of the showcase you can either pick the items up or they are donate on your behalf to a local charity.  Each store has different terms and conditions. Some need a particular amount of items to start an account; some only accept items on appointment.  We recommend you call any boutique you wish to do business with and find out their particular terms and conditions.  Tomorrow, we will talk about the advantage to consigning your items and some general things to know.  Next week we will start looking in depth at each of Femme's conditions for consignment.
