So...gifts...can you buy gifts for friends from a consignment boutique? Is it tacky? Well...that all depends! It depends on what your buying, who it's for, and the occasion.
1) What? Femme enjoys the privilege of getting lots of things - casual to designer - with new tags still on them. These items make wonderful gifts and leave the tacky behind! You don't need to feel weird about getting something like that for someone else. Also, unusual pieces work well. If you find funky or artsy jewelry, feel free to gift someone with them.
2) Who? Don't buy consignment for someone you know doesn't enjoy the thrill of consignment boutiques. This is thinking about yourself more than them. But, if you have a friend or family member who is totally fine with consignment you can feel comfortable purchasing those "with tags still on them" items. If you are unsure about the person's views on consignment, bring them on a shopping trip and show them how wonderful it can be.
3) Occasions? Birthdays are fine for giving consignment items as long as the first two criteria are met. Spur of the moments gifts are also perfect with consignment!! House warming gifts need to meet the above criteria as well, but for wedding you need to go with where the bride is registered. Ask the mom in question before you go to a kids consignment for a baby shower.
All in all, done with a thoughtful heart, consignment can be a great place to find interesting items and gifts you otherwise could not afford for those special people in your life. If you just don't feel right about it, consider getting a gift card or the shopping trip idea!
