Skirts.
The perfect feminine accent for so many reasons. They come in a wide variety of cuts, colors and styles. They can be your go to piece for work or your prefect weekend flare. They are feminine, flirty, chic and elegant.
But what are the rules to buying the right skirt?
1) Length: Don't be capture by trendy do's and don'ts as much as you are by your own leg shape. The skirt should hit you right at the thinnest part of your leg. This draws the eye to the thin part and makes you look thinner. If you are petite you might play with the length of the skirt, a long skirt can make you look shorter while a slim shorter skirt can give you some height with a heel.
2) Fit: Different skirts fit differently. Pencil skirts should skim your hips. A pencil skirt should cup just a bit in the back or you can loose your curves and the skirt looks boxy and ill-fitting. It should never fit you so tight you leave nothing to the imagination. A-line skirts should fit comfortably but close around the hips and then flare out from there. Check for added bulk with an a-line skirt. While they can help balance a fuller top they can also add more to an already full bottom. The beauty of a skirt, unlike a dress, is you only have to work with sizing on one half of your body.
3) Color: The great part about skirts is you don't have to be as particular about color because it is not up next to your face. Feel free to try that strange green, golden yellow or bright pink. A word of warning, if you are particularly pale or ashy stick with skirts in your color season. Good skin can carry you through lots of colors, but when all else fails try leggings, fishnets or tights. Also, white skirts actually make you look tan not pale.
4) Types: Pencil skirts accent your curves and are very sexy. You can moderate or accentuate the racy side of this Femme Fatale skirt with a boxy or baggy cut top. A-line skirts can help minimize curves but they can also add bulk so make sure you wear them with a close fitting top. Mini skirts should be left to the younger crowds and at the least must be worn with leggings regardless of age. Flats also help make minis more acceptable. Long skirts come in a fitted design which can be worn western or sophisticated. This long fitted design can be more of a dated classic than the more timeless pencil skirt. Long flowing skirts are feminine and perfect for hot weather weekends. They lend a romantic air to any outfit. Try lots of different types because you will be able to work more than one look into your wardrobe.
5) Accents: Patterns, cuts, ruffles, flares, fluting, fringe and embroidered details are beautiful on skirts. Look for accents which fall in the right places. They need to hide your least favorite parts and accent your favorite parts. If they draw the eye to your curvy hips you may want to look for embellishment near the bottom to draw the eye to your slim ankles. If the skirt has a pattern check the size. Small women should be cautious of large prints which can be overwhelming. Skirts are a wonderful way to keep cool in the summer and look feminine even when it gets hot. The flare, fun, and sheer femininity of a skirt demands you have at least one in your wardrobe even if you aren't a skirt girl.
